Fire Breathing Turtles season opener

(UPI - Grosse Pointe)

The Fire Breathing Turtles applied tons of pressure Saturday afternoon versus the Roseville Reds.  Fans enjoyed a lopsided game in terms of ball possession as the Turtles passed well and played an attacking style in their season opener.

Strong goaltending by Mike Fikany and Alex Curcuru withstood an early attack from the visiting Reds.  The defense grew stronger as the tandem of Ava Crowley and Emilie O'Mara split time with the pair of Liam Shier and Ben Pidgeon.

Several Turtles were adjusting to the 'big' field and offsides for the first time in their careers.  It did not stop their hard work as Imran Siddiqui and Matt Fabry were tireless in their efforts.

Stopper and attack positions were played solidly as Mike Schmidt, Ethan Rothenbuhler and Olivia Mlynarek took turns applying pressure and turning away the Red attack.

Goals were scored using strong teamwork.  Sylvia Hodges well struck corner kick resulted in a fine goal by Imran Siddiqui.  A later goal was added as Allison Vern sent a great clearing pass out to Mike Fikany and Matt Fabry.  They combined to set up the hot-footed Siddiqui for a second goal.

As the game flowed, the Turtles became more an more agressive.  The ball stayed in the Roseville end of the field for much of the second half thanks to solid play by first time GPSA midfielder Shannon Kerr.

The game was an impressive effort on a beautiful fall day.  Several players were seen enjoying donuts and drinks after the contest.  The coaches were very pleased with the effort and attitudes of this young team.  Great games are coming up.  Go Turtles!
